The Run, Women, Run! Movement sprung out of the backlash and call for action from the political temperament of the current administration and ultra conservative governance that threatens the rights of women, immigrants, LBGTQ, black and the "have nots". This sparked by the #MeToo Movement has ignited a massive drive towards more women running for political offices than ever before in American history. Not since the Suffrage movement have women become more involved with a political narrative for a more fair playing field and a transferring of power at the grassroots level from local city councils to gubernatorial seats. This has been demonstrated by millions of women from soccer moms to elite professionals and diverse cultures joining Women’s Marches in neighborhoods and municipalities across America. Subsequently, many are deciding to do more than march. A record number of over 26,000 women sought help with launching their political campaigns from NGOs such as Emily’s List, Emerge, and She Should Run.
Statistically, as of 2020, women hold 126, or 23.6%, of the 535 seats in the 116th U.S. Congress - 25, or 25.0%, of the 100 seats in the Senate and 101, or 23.2%, of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the first woman Speaker of the House, holds the highest position in the House and is second in line of presidential succession.
As of June 2020, per CAWP research and population data from the U.S. Census, of the 1,621 mayors of U.S. cities with populations over 30,000, 378, or 23.3%, were women. (Primary reference source: U.S. Census Population Data.)I
In the November 2020 elections, Kamala Devi Harris made history as the first woman Vice-President to be elected into the high office of the United States government.
